Reflection about the Merlion

The Merlion is a 37-metre tall statue. It is a well-known symbolic figure for Singapore. When foreigners hear about Merlion, they will instantly know what it is. The Merlion attracted a lot of tourists too. It is a tourist attraction where many visitors flock there to take a look at the 'famous' statue. Furthermore, the Merlion is made out of a lion's head and a fish's tail. The lion head represents the name, Singapura (lion city), which Sang Nila Utama had bestowed upon our island upon discovering a lion. The fish tail represents Singapore's history of once being a fishing village. The Merlion can be our national icon due to these special features.

Since the Merlion is considered as a national icon for Singapore as it is a tourist attraction, there are also some other tourist attractions which we should consider as our icons too. Such examples are Changi Airport and Marina Bay Sands, which many people around the world are also familiar with, other than the Merlion.
As Sang Nila Utama's story was only a legend, it might not be true. Thus, the Merlion may not be the best icon for Singapore as it clearly shows how this icon represents Singapore based on its name and not about who built this garden city

Lesson Reflection 17/2/2015

Today, i learned that China is actually very  wealthy and powerful. China is big, has closing a 1.4 billion population and an abundance of natural resources.China is the largest trading nation in the world and plays a vital role in international trade, and has increasingly engaged in trade organizations and treaties in recent years. China became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001. China also has free trade agreements with several nations, including China–Australia Free Trade AgreementChina–South Korea Free Trade AgreementASEAN–China Free Trade AreaSwitzerland and PakistanThere will be possible implications on Singapore due to this. There will be strong competition between China and that will lead to the stressful lives in Singapore due to its dwindling  population. Thus, i conclude that there are many impacts on yhe growth of china's economy.

Lesson Reflection 6/2/2015
Today, Miss Huang talked about the one child policy in China. I feel that given the dwindling population currently in Singapore, i feel that Singapore should not implement the one child policy.I think that the generation of people born within the one child policy will have a hard time supporting their families.

Lesson Reflection 15/1

Today, our new CID teacher, Ms Huang, showed us a picture of the Little India Riot that occurred late last year. When i first saw the picture, the first few words that came to my mind were messy, rowdy and dangerous. I felt that as it was only a bus driver hitting an Indian worker by accident and there was no need to start a riot and throw objects at the bus and damage emergency vehicles. She also showed us a video of the living conditions of the foreign workers in Singapore. After watching the video, I really feel that the Singapore government should do something to ensure that foreign workers in Singapore have satisfactory living conditions.Otherwise, foreign workers might stop coming to Singapore.

Ms Huang also told us a story about how a man abandoned his wife after a ship incident. He himself got to safety but his wife died. You might think that the man is very selfish and cruel, but his wife actually told him to take care of their children. His wife made really a wise decision in my opinion. From this i have learnt that we should not judge a book by its cover.

Reflection on poverty in Singapore

I feel that poverty is not a very big problem in Singapore as we are a relatively rich country. Even those who are not so rich can apply for the FAS scheme provided by the government. That means that students would not need to pay for school basics such as textbooks and school uniforms, and services provided by the school such as Asknlearn for our school. However, more and more people are now wanting to get rich by going to casinos and borrowing from loan sharks, which is not good as it may lead to them becoming broke.

I really feel that i am very privileged to be in Singapore because it is a relatively rich country. I am also glad that my parents do not need to struggle to make ends meet. I should really  appreciate what i have at the moment and treasure it.

December holiday reflection

I did not go overseas during the holidays, but i did have quite a lot of fun.

I went out on a gathering with my primary sch friends.we had a buffet and played many games too.it was really fun.from this experience,i have learnt that friendships are very important and we should cherish the time we spend with our friends.

I also went on my first ice skating session with my parents at first,i was very nervous as ice was a completely different and new surface for me.

When i first stepped onto the rink,i fell down many times. However, i did not give up and continued to learn skiing.after the end of my first session,i felt much more comfortable at ice skating.

From this experience,i have learnt that no matter what kind of obstacles we face,we should not give up and persevere on.this way,we will eventually succeed.

Due to all the fun that i had during the holidays,i did not start on my holiday homework until the last 2 weeks. I felt the stress of doing homework at the last min.

From this,i learnt that we should always finish our homework as soon as possible so that we will not have the stress and we can enjoy doing other things.
